Urban Farming

This Thursday's Post is from Eve of Eve's Little Earthlings. When she isn't giving virtual tours of her garden, Eve creates Waldorf inspired children's toys, pillows and home decor made from re-used and felted wool sweaters.

We have been keeping chickens in our urban backyard for 12 years. At the end of March, I picked up our latest flock of 5 hens. We didn't have enough straw, so I added some wool scraps to the nesting boxes. There's always lots of scraps in my workshop needing to be reused.

Rhubarb is one of the earliest crops we can enjoy in this climate!

My daughter still likes to help out in the garden. Here she is planting onoins . When the kids were little, they had a business selling extra veggies to the neighbours. Nowadays, they're busy with school and jobs, but still help out with planting and weeding.

Early peas. Squirrels love peas (and strawberries), so there is a net over this crop!

Over the last 20 years, the veggie garden has gotten larger and larger. I spend a lot of time in the summer and fall canning and
freezing produce, especially tomatoes!

On June 4th we had a birthday celebration and enjoyed all this garden bounty!

Let us eat Lettuce! By last weekend, we were giving away all this lettuce. Here's a dressing recipe that is perfect for these tender and fresh greens. Happy Gardening and eating!

Poppy Seed Dressing
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup sunflower oil
2 tablespoons honey
1.2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dry mustard
1/3 cup cider vinegar
2 T chopped onion
Throw all these ingredients in a blender and buzz until smooth. Then add:
2 tsp poppy seeds and stir.
This recipe makes a generous amount of dressing, enough for 2 or 3 family
dinners.

No yard is complete with out a chipmunk or two! This one is made from a repurposed sweater, but Eve has the genuine article in residence (he likes the chickens' breakfast)! For more sweet buddies and hidey holes to keep them in, visit Eve's Little Earthlings on Etsy.

Wow I am impressed with how neat, clean, weed free, organized, and freshly painted your "farm" is. We gardened for years but our results were never quite so photogenic.

The chicken tractor is parked and the chickens have a permanent yard extension that reaches behind the greenhouse. Moving the chickens just did not work out. There were many years of weedy gardens when our kids were little. we now have the time to keep things looking good.
