Mini Monday - SewKatiepie

Etsy: Your place to buy & sell all things handmade

Meet Kate of SewKatiepie:

Hi, I'm Kate. Katiepie is one of my nicknames. I love to sew.

I'm a kiwi mother to a 2 year old daughter and live with my fantastic partner (her father) and two of his three teenage sons.

I love fabric. I have been sewing as a hobby since my grandmother bought me a sewing machine at the age of 15 (I won't let on how long that is - I have since upgraded the machine though!). Having left the corporate world to have my daughter, I am now thoroughly enjoying being a mother and exploring a more creative lifestyle.

I also enjoy gardening, sailing, baking (such a fun activity with toddlers. Messy, but fun. Hence the line of retro aprons!) and weekly french lessons.

I am loving the opportunity to create environmentally friendly clothing for children. As a mother, I am conscious of what I feed my daughter, her environment and what I clothe her in. I love the fact that Merino wool is now available in silky soft weaves that are not scratchy and that I can throw in the washing machine - just as easy as polar fleece but oh so, so much nicer!

I hope you enjoy looking around my shop. If there is something you like but not in your required size, or something that is not currently listed but that I have sold - just convo me. I love making to order. Please don't be shy...

I'm currently working on some more hoodies for toddlers which will be in store soon.

Mini Monday - Fairyfolk

Etsy: Your place to buy & sell all things handmade

Meet Donni of Fairyfolk:

I grew up in South Africa... a lovely, natural childhood surrounded by animals and wilderness. I have lived in many different countries, Ireland, England, New Zealand and now finally America where we have settled at last. I have a loving Kiwi husband and two gorgeous children. Crafting is how I reconnect with myself. It is the language of my soul and spoken often. I came to needle felting only recently and have fallen in love with all of it... the sound of the needle in the wool, the smell of the wool, the feeling of my creation in my hands. I am so grateful for the wide range and color of the wool I can work with... it makes anything possible.

Mini Monday - Fairies' Nest

Etsy: Your place to buy & sell all things handmade

Meet Cynthia of Fairies' Nest:

My name is Cynthia Toy (really!) and I have been a doll maker for about...hmm...ever... but seriously and professionally for about 20 years.

I think my dollmaking developed from an acute fiber addiction that I inherited from my mom; plus an overactive imagination, reading lots of fantasy, 3 sons, and I just love to play with dolls! I've always been interested in needle crafts of all kinds and have spent many years experimenting and learning how to manipulate cloth and fibers; sewing, spinning, knitting... you name it, I wanted to learn it!

I love to make dolls, it never gets boring because so many different techniques are involved... tired of sewing? You can glue for awhile, or knit, or play clay, or stuff, cut, weave... there's are all kinds of fun to be had and new techniques to learn all the time. I'm also a huge believer in all things fairy and making dolls lets all those fairies that have been living in my head find their way into the world. (Whew! It gets crowded in there!)The hardest part for me is letting my babies go off to new owners...but that's what pays the bills, so off they go!

Each of my dolls requires many hours to make as I design and create each doll completely from my own imagination. Many of the dolls are made from the inside out without patterns and each face is carefully drawn and painted by hand using no patterns or stencils. Because of this, no two dolls are EVER exactly alike, they are all one of a kind; like people, each has its own distinct personality.

Mini Monday - Merrydale Dolls

Etsy: Your place to buy & sell all things handmade

Meet Chris of Merrydale Dolls:

My name is Chris and I am Merrydale's one and only designer and maker of dolls. I am originally from Yorkshire, England, and have also lived in Moravia, Czech Republic. In both places there is a strong tradition of folk lore and arts and crafts. I now live in Toronto, which is a city enriched by the cultural diversity of its inhabitants.

I love making dolls and sending them out into the world to become good companions for the children they meet.

The simple dolls I make are inspired by the ancient tradition of dollmaking from many cultures around the world, as well as the Waldorf/Steiner Schools tradition. I am grateful to the parents at the Waldorf school (where my sons, now grown-up, attended kindergarten and early grades) for passing on to me techniques of dollmaking.

I believe that the toys we give to our children should nourish their imaginations. I want children to create by themselves in their play, so my dolls' features have only a suggestion of character. The facial expressions will change in the imagination of the child.

My favourite book about a dollmaker is "Goldie the Dollmaker" by M.B. Goffstein.

Mini Monday - Wood Toy Shop

Etsy: Your place to buy & sell all things handmade

Meet Mark of Wood Toy Shop:

I have been a toymaker for ten years. Wooden toys are a great alternative to mass marketed plastic toys. My toys are built to last from hard woods and are finished with non-toxic mineral oil. Most of the wood I use are mill ends and scrap from cabinet shops.

Educated in Finance and Economics, I have worked in Finance, as a Software Engineer and a Flight Instructor. I am currently a stay at home dad/toymaker and have found that to be the most fun and rewarding.
